Other people: hey, weather forecast looks great, so let's book a last minute trip to the beach this weekend!
Me: the above, plus, must sew a rash guard set for my daughter to wear in the next 24 hours!
I'm not someone who usually enjoys speed sewing at all, but this time I relished the challenge.
With no time to invest in new materials or patterns, I went to my remnant box and patterns box for inspirations. I decided to use the leftover from my Fit Capsule set, and the Ellie & Mac Going Home sweater and the Waves & Wild Lightning Leggings to make Freya her new outfit.
For the raglan rash guard, I wanted it semi-fitted and with a "swim-style" neck band. So I cut the top pattern in 3T with 3/4 sleeves, and self-drafted the neck band in a similar way to the Elevate Crop Top band (but without crossing over). I shortened the top by 1cm.
For the shorts, I cut the knee-length legs and the waistband in 4T.
I reverse coverstitched everything that could be topstitched, including the hems. I love the sporty effect it gives! It may not be the most obvious thing to be doing when you are trying to complete a new outfit in less than a day, but I have no regrets.
You know what? Speed sewing has never gone so well! I managed to knock this little outfit up in a matter of hours (which is good, as that was all I had) without any memorable unpicking, which has got to be a first. It also fitted Freya nicely, and got worn consecutively in 2 sunny weekends (also unheard of) shortly afterwards.
